Michael Moore posts bail money for Wikileaks' Julian Assange

  • December 14th, 2010 1:14 pm ET
For the past few weeks, all we've been hearing about it how awful this whole Wikileaks situation is.  Wikileaks' de facto leader, Julian Assange, was first the focus of a worldwide manhunt after he leaked a slew of classified government documents (read: emails) to the world, and now he sits in a British jail cell.  Perhaps not for long, though: Bowling for Columbine director Michael Moore has just announced that he's putting up the cash for Assange's bail.  This oughtta end well...
You know what they say:  if there's a big story erupting in the news, it's only a matter of time before Glenn Beck, Donald Trump, or Michael Moore (or some combination of those three) get involved.  Case in point: the ongoing Wikileaks scandal, which has been dominating the news for the past few weeks.
In case you hadn't heard, Wikileaks-- an online organization that specializes in "leaking" other people's valuable information to the world-- is in dutch with the U.S. government (and a few other governments) after leaking a slew (read: thousands) of "classified documents" to the world's internet users.  Now, these "classified documents" turned out to be nothing more than snarky emails being sent back and forth amongst the world's leaders, but that hasn't stopped Assange from becoming the world's most wanted man.
Last week, Assange ended up tossed into a British prison after being arrested on sexual assault charges--- specifically, rape.  Turned out, however, that the "rape" charge revolved around the fact that Assange had unprotected sex while in Sweden last year, a crime that's considered a "sexual assault" in that country.  Some say that Assange's arrest has more to do with his recent online shenanigans than his actual criminal record, but that's up to you to fret over.
We're here to discuss Michael Moore, who's just inserted himself into the Wikileaks/Julian Assange saga in a most unexpected way:  he's offered to pay Assange's bail.
Here's what Moore's saying in his announcement over on the Huffington Post:
Yesterday, in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London, the lawyers for WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange presented to the judge a document from me stating that I have put up $20,000 of my own money to help bail Mr. Assange out of jail.
Furthermore, I am publicly offering the assistance of my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars.
Moore goes on to call out a number of politicians who he feels have gone "over the top" in their attacks on Assange following the big Wikileaks, uh, leak, and he also explains why Assange is a "good kind" (our terminology) of terrorist.  Here's what he's saying about whether or not Wikileaks-- and Assange-- should be considered terrorists:
And indeed they are! They exist to terrorize the liars and warmongers who have brought ruin to our nation and to others. Perhaps the next war won't be so easy because the tables have been turned -- and now it's Big Brother who's being watched ... by us!  WikiLeaks deserves our thanks for shining a huge spotlight on all this
Well, this oughtta end well, huh?  Who wants to start the countdown for when the Right-wingers are going to start frothing at the mouth?
For the record, we think-- here at Comedy Examiner HQ-- that Michael Moore should probably stay out of this one, and it's not necessary for him to insert himself into every ongoing political scandal that rears its ugly head.  Yes, Assange's site has some merit, and yes, there's something to be said for fighting tyranny.  But these kinda tactics only get misconstrued and offered up as examples of Moore's mania, not his genuine desire to see our country succeed.  As a Michael Moore fan, I think I can say this:  Michael Moore, you've done some awesome work, and I see your point here, but...come on, man.  This is why people have stopped taking you seriously.
